Web Guiding Systems: Specifications, Accuracy and Model Selection
A web guiding system is a closed-loop alignment system that detects the position of a moving web and continuously corrects lateral deviation during roll-to-roll production. This page lists the measurable specifications of the web guiding systems, controllers, sensors and actuators manufactured by XW Machinery, together with three typical model configurations used on slitting, rewinding, printing, coating, laminating, packaging and lithium battery lines.
If you are still at the concept stage, read What Is a Web Guiding System? first. If you already know your material, speed and web width, use the specification table and model comparison below.

Three Typical Web Guide System Models
The three configurations below cover the majority of industrial requirements. Each is built from standard XW Machinery components, so spare parts and replacements remain available after commissioning.
Model 1: All-in-One Web Guide Control System, 24 V DC Servo EPC
Controller, sensor and servo correction unit are integrated in a single housing, so installation requires one mounting position and one cable set. The unit runs on industrial 24 V DC input and supplies a stable 12 V DC sensor output, and supports edge, line and center guiding modes.
- Best for: narrow web, bag making, labeling, paper processing and compact retrofit projects
- Why choose it: shortest installation time, no separate controller cabinet
- Trade-off: fixed thrust and stroke compared with a separate actuator and frame

Model 2: EPC-600 Servo Web Guide Controller with Servo Linear Actuator
This is the high-accuracy configuration. The EPC-600 servo controller reaches correction accuracy up to 0.01 mm with response under 10 ms, and drives a servo linear actuator built on a precision ball screw with 150 mm stroke, 40 mm/s maximum speed and 200 kg thrust. The controller automatically adjusts correction parameters according to material type, speed and deviation range.
- Best for: high-speed film, high-end printing, nonwoven and other thin-material lines
- Why choose it: highest positioning accuracy, strong load capacity for heavy guide rollers and wide material racks
- Trade-off: requires professional commissioning and periodic servo system maintenance
Model 3: CCD Sensor with Steering Frame for Wide or Heavy Webs
For wide webs, heavy rolls and lithium battery electrode or separator processing, the correction mechanism is a steering frame rather than a compact actuator. A CCD edge guide sensor or CCD linear sensor tracks the web edge with higher resolution and better stability than a conventional photoelectric sensor, and the steering frame shifts the roller assembly laterally to compensate.
- Best for: BOPP, PET and CPP films, foil, paper, laminating and battery electrode lines
- Why choose it: high structural load capacity, wide-width capability, stable tracking at speed
- Trade-off: larger footprint and higher installed cost than an all-in-one unit
Model Comparison
| Model | Typical accuracy | Typical response | Footprint | Typical line |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| All-in-One 24 V DC Servo EPC | Servo class | Servo class | Single housing | Narrow web, bag making, labeling, retrofit |
| EPC-600 controller + servo linear actuator | Up to 0.01 mm | Under 10 ms | Controller cabinet + actuator | High-speed film, high-end printing, nonwoven |
| CCD sensor + steering frame | High resolution CCD tracking | Fast signal processing | Full guide frame | Wide film, foil, laminating, lithium battery |
How to Choose the Detection Method
- Opaque materials with a clean edge: photoelectric edge detection is stable, resists dust and light interference, and keeps maintenance simple. See the Edge Guide Sensor.
- Thin film, reflective, printed or high-speed materials: CCD linear scanning gives higher resolution and more stable tracking. See the CCD Linear Sensor.
- Printed registration marks and color blocks: a color mark or contrast sensor locks onto the printed reference regardless of machine speed. See the Color Mark Sensor GS-180 and the XWDGM Contrast Sensor.
- Transparent films: ultrasonic sensing is used where an optical edge is difficult to resolve.

Web Guiding and Tension Control Work Together
Web guiding controls lateral position; tension control controls longitudinal force. A line with unstable tension will drift even with a correct guider, so both systems are usually specified together. See Web Tension Control: Tension Range and Control Methods for the tension side of the specification.
Frequently Asked Questions
What accuracy can a web guide system achieve?
Servo EPC systems reach up to 0.01 mm correction accuracy with response under 10 ms. Photoelectric correction controllers typically deliver 0.1 mm to 0.5 mm with 20 ms to 50 ms response, which meets the needs of most medium and low speed lines.
Which sensor type should I use?
Choose by material, not by price. Photoelectric sensors suit opaque materials with a clean edge. CCD sensors suit thin film, reflective, printed or high-speed webs. Color mark and contrast sensors suit printed registration marks. Ultrasonic sensing is used for transparent films.
What information do I need before requesting a quotation?
Material type, web width, line speed, correction stroke, available installation space, and whether the reference is the web edge, a printed line or the web centerline. Machine drawings or photos help our engineers confirm the frame and actuator configuration.
Can the system be integrated with an existing production line?
Yes. Servo correction structures are compact and can be integrated into existing lines with limited installation requirements. Compact and all-in-one units are designed specifically for retrofit projects.
Do you provide OEM and custom configurations?
Yes. Customized dimensions, travel ranges, control modes, sensing ranges, mounting structures, output signals and communication interfaces are available.
