Ball Type Differential Shaft for Slitter Rewinder Machines

Also known as Ball Type Differential Air Shaft, Pneumatic Differential Shaft, or Slip Differential Shaft, this product is designed for precision slitting and rewinding applications.

Solving uneven tension issues in multi-roll slitting and rewinding applications. The XW Machinery Ball Type Differential Shaft is designed to provide independent tension control for each rewind core, ensuring consistent winding quality and reducing material waste.

Using advanced pneumatic friction ring technology, this differential friction shaft automatically compensates for web thickness variations during rewinding. Each friction ring can slip independently, maintaining uniform web tension across all rolls and preventing wrinkles, telescoping, loose winding, and roll deformation.

Suitable for PET film, BOPP film, CPP film, aluminum foil, copper foil, paper, labels, flexible packaging materials, optical films, lithium battery separator films, and nonwoven fabrics.

Also known as a Slip Shaft, Differential Rewind Shaft, or Pneumatic Differential Shaft, this system is widely used in modern slitter rewinder machines requiring precise tension control and stable high-speed operation.

How Ball Type Differential Shafts Work

A Ball Type Differential Shaft uses independently controlled friction rings mounted on the shaft body. Pneumatic pressure activates steel balls inside each friction ring, generating controlled slip torque during the rewinding process.

When differences in material thickness, winding tension, or roll diameter occur, each friction ring automatically compensates by slipping independently. This ensures equal web tension across every rewind core and significantly improves rewinding quality.

Compared with conventional air shafts, ball type differential shafts offer more precise tension control, making them ideal for narrow web slitting and lightweight materials that require accurate winding performance.

Frequently Asked Questions About Differential Shafts

What is a differential friction shaft?

A differential friction shaft is a specialized rewinding shaft used in slitter rewinder machines to maintain equal web tension across multiple rewind cores. Each friction ring can slip independently, automatically compensating for material thickness variations during rewinding.

How does a ball type differential shaft work?

A ball type differential shaft uses pneumatically activated steel balls inside friction rings to generate adjustable slip torque. Each friction ring operates independently to equalize tension across multiple rolls.

What is the difference between lug type and ball type differential shafts?

Ball type differential shafts provide smoother slip control and higher tension accuracy, making them ideal for films, labels, and lightweight materials.

Lug type differential shafts offer higher torque capacity and are better suited for thick paper, nonwoven materials, and heavy-duty rewinding applications.

How do I choose a differential shaft for a slitting machine?

Selection depends on:

  • Material type
  • Web thickness
  • Core size
  • Slitting width
  • Roll weight
  • Rewinding speed
  • Required slip torque

Ball type differential shafts are generally recommended for precision tension control and thin-film applications.

What core sizes are supported?

Standard core sizes include:

  • 3 Inch Core
  • 6 Inch Core

Custom core sizes can also be manufactured upon request.

Can shaft length be customized?

Yes. XW Machinery provides customized shaft lengths based on customer drawings or machine specifications.

What is the minimum order quantity?

We support orders starting from 1 piece.

How are long shafts shipped?

Long shafts are packed in reinforced wooden cases to ensure transportation safety and prevent damage during shipment.
