Watch How a Magnetic Powder Clutch Works
Watch this video to understand how a magnetic powder clutch converts excitation current into smooth, controllable torque. The video also explains its working principle, common applications and the key parameters required for correct clutch selection.
A magnetic powder clutch uses magnetic particles inside the working gap between its input and output components. When excitation current is applied, the magnetic field causes the particles to form controlled chains, allowing torque to pass smoothly from the driving side to the driven side. Increasing or decreasing the excitation current changes the transmitted torque.
This operating principle makes the clutch especially suitable for applications requiring adjustable torque, controlled acceleration and continuous web tension regulation.

What Is a Magnetic Powder Clutch?
A magnetic powder clutch is an electromagnetic torque-control device installed between a motor and a driven shaft. Unlike a conventional mechanical clutch with abrupt engagement, it provides smooth and continuously adjustable torque without direct friction-plate engagement.
The output torque can be regulated by changing the excitation current. When the clutch is integrated with a tension controller and load cell, the system can automatically adjust torque as the roll diameter and operating conditions change.
This helps reduce common converting problems such as:
- Unstable web tension
- Wrinkles and material stretching
- Loose or excessively tight rolls
- Telescoping during rewinding
- Sudden acceleration and mechanical shock
- Material waste caused by uneven winding

How Does a Magnetic Powder Clutch Work?
Magnetic powder is contained inside the working gap between the input and output parts of the clutch.
When no excitation current is applied, only minimal torque is transmitted. When current is supplied to the electromagnetic coil, a magnetic field forms inside the clutch. The magnetic particles align into chains and transmit torque across the working gap.
Within the clutch’s rated operating range, increasing the excitation current increases the transmitted torque. This allows the machine control system to regulate winding torque and web tension smoothly.
Because the clutch can operate with a controlled speed difference between its input and output sides, it is suitable for continuous slip applications—provided that the generated heat remains within the model’s rated heat-dissipation capacity.

Key Advantages
Smooth and Adjustable Torque
The excitation current can be adjusted to provide gradual and repeatable torque control, supporting smooth starting, stopping and acceleration.
Stable Web Tension Control
When connected to an automatic tension controller and tension sensor, the clutch can maintain more consistent tension during winding or unwinding.
Fast Control Response
The clutch responds quickly to changes in excitation current, making it suitable for production lines with changing roll diameters and operating speeds.
Reduced Mechanical Shock
Smooth torque transmission helps protect shafts, bearings, rolls and other machine components from sudden impact loads.
Flexible Machine Integration
Different torque capacities, mounting structures, shaft dimensions and electrical specifications are available for new equipment and replacement projects.

Applications
Magnetic powder clutches are widely used in:
- Slitting and rewinding machines
- Printing and packaging equipment
- Film and paper converting lines
- Coating and laminating machines
- Label and adhesive tape production
- Textile and nonwoven machinery
- Aluminum and copper foil processing
- Lithium battery electrode production
- Wire, cable and fiber winding systems
How to Select the Correct Magnetic Powder Clutch
A magnetic powder clutch should not be selected by torque alone. For reliable continuous operation, the following information must be evaluated:
- Required normal and maximum torque
- Input shaft speed
- Output shaft speed
- Maximum continuous slip speed
- Continuous operating time
- Heat-dissipation and cooling conditions
- Shaft diameter and mounting dimensions
- Excitation voltage and control method
- Machine application and processed material
Continuous slip generates heat. The approximate slip power can be calculated as:
Slip Power (W) = 2π × Torque (N·m) × Slip Speed (rpm) ÷ 60
The calculated slip power must remain within the clutch model’s permitted heat-dissipation capacity. Incorrect selection may cause overheating, reduced magnetic powder life or unstable torque.
For accurate model selection, please send XW Machinery your torque, input and output speeds, continuous working time and installation drawing.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are magnetic powder clutches and magnetic particle clutches the same?
Yes. “Magnetic powder clutch” and “magnetic particle clutch” normally refer to the same torque-control technology. XW Machinery primarily uses the term “magnetic powder clutch” for its factory and wholesale product range.
What is the difference between a magnetic powder clutch and a brake?
A clutch transfers controlled torque between an input and an output shaft. A magnetic powder brake generates controllable braking torque against a fixed housing, making it commonly used for unwinding tension control.
How is clutch torque controlled?
Torque is adjusted by changing the excitation current supplied to the clutch coil. A manual controller, PLC or automatic tension control system can provide the control signal.
Can a magnetic powder clutch operate continuously in slip?
Yes, but the slip power and resulting heat must remain within the clutch’s rated heat-dissipation capacity. Torque and speed data should be checked before selecting a model.
What torque range is available?
XW Machinery supplies magnetic powder clutches with rated torque from 6 Nm to 400 Nm, depending on the product structure and application.
Can the clutch work with an automatic tension controller?
Yes. The clutch can be integrated with a tension controller, load cell and drive system to create an automatic closed-loop web tension control solution.
Can you customize the shaft and mounting dimensions?
Yes. OEM options can include customized shaft diameter, bore, flange, keyway, mounting dimensions and electrical specifications.
